Modern systems of automation of technological processes set ever greater programming demands. Until recently, it was almost enough to have only two tools. One to develop an interface program /eg. in the form of a ladder structure/, and the second to visualize with the HMI components /eg. text displays/. The primary headache was the steadily increasing price of engineering software, but generally not by itself its growth as the ever-increasing number and variety of software which is necessary for development of the complete project. Many well-known companies providing integrated PLC "buries" the customers with quite a significant number of programs necessary to create the full structure of the control system. Often you can meet the need to purchase different software tools for the "small", "medium" or "large" PLCs, even though they come from the same manufacturer and what's more, which names suggest belonging to the same family of products. It i even worse when the automation system uses both "small" and "large" controllers, then in addition to crazy prices, an additional requirement for proper operation of the installation is the ability to work with different types of software.
